Pterygium
A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth which starts out on the white part of the eye and grows onto the cornea (the clear part of the eye). Pterygia are often referred to as "surfer's eye" and are associated with long term UV exposure and dryness. As they progress, they can lead to excessive irritation, cause changes in vision by inducing astigmatism, and can invade the center of the cornea to block vision. Our surgeons are skilled at removal of these uncomfortable growths.
Pingueculum
A pingueculum is similar to a pterygium except that it is only on the white part of the eye and does not invade the cornea. These growths can also cause irritation and often require consistent lubrication to keep the eyes comfortable.
